In Her Words: Brooke Shares Her Recovery Journey

To support their healing, Epiphany graduates are given the opportunity to share openly about their addiction and recovery experience - an important tool for sustained recovery. Last year, new mother Brooke successfully completed Epiphany's 90-day treatment program and transitioned to our step-down housing with her newborn daughter Emma. To support her and Emma's ongoing journey to build a brighter future, we asked Brooke to write her story down in her own words to be shared with the Epiphany community. We invite you all to read her brave account below - an incredible testament to the impact and importance of your generous support for Epiphany's life-saving services.

“Epiphany has truly changed my life as a mother and provided me with the necessary skills and tools to overcome my addictions to drugs.

My journey was one of struggle. I found myself on the streets, battling drug abuse, and facing the hardships of homelessness. When I first arrived at Epiphany, I was not ready to get sober. However, the incredible staff showed me that I was capable and worthy of being a good mother to my newborn daughter, Emma.

Emma had to spend weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit going through withdrawal from the drugs that were in her system due to my substance abuse during pregnancy.

I entered Epiphany's doors less than a month after she was born. It was a difficult time for both of us. Emma had to spend weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit going through withdrawal from the drugs that were in her system due to my substance abuse during pregnancy. Filled with guilt and shame, I believed that I was not capable or deserving of being a mother to such a precious gift. The thought of giving her up to chase her father crossed my mind. I didn't know how to live without him. I was codependent. I believed I could never provide for her as a mother should.

However, Epiphany was there for me. They provided me with an abundance of care, attention, and most importantly, education. I was given the tools and resources necessary to not only overcome my addiction but also care for a newborn while beginning my journey to recovery. Each day, with their guidance, I grew into the role of a good mother. Epiphany allowed me to bond with my baby and gave me the opportunity to experience the joys and challenges of motherhood. They showed me grace and understanding, allowing me to make mistakes while still holding me accountable for my actions. This support and encouragement helped me grow into a more confident woman and mother.

Today, I stand tall as a testament to the power of rehabilitation and I am forever grateful for the second chance that Epiphany has given me.

Today, Emma is six months old and thriving. She is a happy and content little baby with chubby cheeks and infectious laughter. I am forever grateful to Epiphany for being there and providing me with the strength I needed when I felt like I had none. With their help and the grace of God, I stand here today as a sober, happy, and grateful mother. Epiphany equipped me with tools to maintain my sobriety and continue to be the best mother I can be for Emma.

Epiphany has truly been a blessing in my life. Through their guidance, I have learned that I am capable and deserving of being a good mother, regardless of my past mistakes. Today, I stand tall as a testament to the power of rehabilitation and I am forever grateful for the second chance that Epiphany has given me.”
